Los ñandúes petisos o choiques son las aves corredoras más grandes de la Patagonia y están emparentadas con los grandes ñandúes de las pampas. Forman grandes grupos y se dispersan rápidamente al sentirse amenazados. Varias hembras ponen sus huevos en un mismo nido, pudiendo llegar a más de treinta. El macho los incuba y cuida a los pichones, llamados charitos hasta que éstos se valen por sí mismos.

Se hallan bien adaptado a la estepa, pudiendo sobrevivir con poca agua y alimentándose de insectos, pequeños roedores, pichones de otras aves y plantas.

The lesser rheas or choiques are Patagonia's largest running birds and related to the pampa's greater rheas. They form large groups and scatter rapidly when frightened. Several females lay their eggs, frequently more than thirty, in a single nest. The male incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks, called charitos, until self-reliant.

They are well adapted to the steppe, surviving with little water and feeding on insects, small rodents, other bird chicks and plant matter.
