SABER AZAM, PhD
Dr. Saber Azam is deputy director, Office of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Kosovo. Born in Afghanistan (1955) and educated in Europe and the US, he was president of the Afghan Committee for Humanitarian Aid during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Dr. Azam joined the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 1994, serving as head of operations in East and West Africa administering to Liberian, South Sudanese, Somali, Ethiopian, Burundian, Rwandan, Congolese and Ugandan refugees. He has also served as UNHCR deputy special envoy for South-East Europe. He joined the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations in Kosovo as deputy director, charged with the return of minority ethnic groups� displaced persons and refugees.
